2020 has been a year that can be described in a lot of ways, Most of which aren’t positive. The world was brought to its knees by a global pandemic known now as Covid19. Governments around the world struggled to figure out how to deal with it. Our own not only struggled with a pandemic but also rising cultural unrest stemming from massive amounts of anger. Because of that struggle, economies around the globe faltered and financial stability came into question for millions if not billions of people. The US has been on its own struggle bus for a while now and it seems the further down that road we get, the more folks are worried for their own safety, the safety of their families and the concern that the very foundation of our constitutional republic could collapse before our eyes, sending the country into a civil war. I know a lot of you guys probably just said, YUP, to yourselves while watching this. Its a legitimate concern that is spreading. And because of the roller coaster economy, cultural unrest and potential for falling governmental structure, people are buying guns. And I’m talking… LOTS of guns. Welcome back to the gun collective, my name is Jon Patton and the fight for gun rights continues. Time is absolutely flying this year. I feel like 2 weeks ago we were dealing with the hot days of summer but alas, the year is chugging forward and people are buying guns. As we’ve done with the rest of the year, we are going to break down the numbers for October 2020.
Last year, October 2019, the FBI reported background checks totaling just shy of 2.4 million. This year… lol this year. 3.3 million. We were 90 thousand short of breaking last years record by a million. THAT is amazing. Not only that but the downward slide we were seeing since June just bumped back up a little.
Let’s recap the year again, just in case you aren’t up to date. Again, these are background check numbers and are not a 1 to 1 correlation for the amount of gun sales but rather an indicator. January, 2.7 million. February, 2.8, March, 3.7 million, April 2.9 million, May 3.1 million, June, the highest ever in recorded history at 3.9 million, July, 3.6 million, August, 3.1 mil, September 2.9 million and October at 3.3 million background checks. Let’s take a minute and bask in those numbers. Now, its also very important to note that EVERY SINGLE MONTH this year has set an all time record. We’ve also now passed last year’s total by almost 4 million with the 2020 total reaching 32.1 million. That’s fantastic.
To put some context to these numbers, let’s compare them to world populations. With our yearly total, we could almost arm the entire country of Malaysia. We could arm Somalia twice, We could almost arm Croatia 8 times over.
For the monthly total of 3.3 million, we could arm everyone in Puerto Rico and have guns left over. We could arm EVERYONE Utah with a couple left over and we could arm North Dakota 4 times over and have 300k to spare. If we look at cities, we could arm phoenix, philly or San Antonio twice. We could arm Tucson 6 times over and Corpus Christi Texas 10 times over.
No matter how you look at it, these numbers are staggering. It makes me wonder what is really happening out there and if the new gun owners are going to be as passionate as we hope they will. I suppose only time will tell.
