Savage Impulse, Rarebreed FRT15, KelTec P50 – TGC News!

This week on TGC News, savage brings out a straight pull bolt action, a new trigger that is sure to piss off the ATF and lots more!

Welcome back to another episode of TGC News, the only gun news show that covers things you actually care about, my name is Jon Patton.
Before we get into things, I want to remind you guys that the The Big Bore Barrett Giveaway is well underway! I am giving away a Barrett M82A1 but I can’t say too much here because I don’t want big tech to delete this video so go to the link in the description or head over to our website, theguncollective.com to find out more!
Now, how about some gun news? First up this week is a new one from Savage. Its called the Impulse and its a bit different that any savage bolt action ever made. The Impulse is an ambidextrous straight pull bolt action rifle with some really interesting features. First, the bolt handle can be swapped to be on either side even though ejection is always on the right. The bolt also has what they are calling hexlock technology which uses a ball bearing system to lock the bolt into place when a round is in the chamber. On a traditional bolt action, the rotation of the handle is actually locking the gun, obviously this doesnt have that option. They claim that higher pressures also make the gun lock up tighter. Beyond that, there is a quick release button on the back side of the bolt that allows you to cycle the gun without taking the safety off. That’s a rad one for hunters that want to clear the gun in a safe manner. The bolt being removable also means that if you take the handle out completely, the gun is locked up. Kind of turns it into a key for the gun. Beyond that, the bolt handle accepts aftermarket knobs out of the box. The top of the receiver has a pic rail milled into it. And of course savages normal accustock and accutrigger. The gun will be shipping in 3 different models. The Impulse Big Game, which has a green cerakoted receiver and Kuiu camo on the stock, comes in 6 different calibers with a carbon steel fluted and threaded barrel, most of which are 22 inches long. That one has an MSRP of 1449. The Impulse Hog Hunter is a more simplified version with an OD green stock and black barreled action. It comes in 4 different calibers and barrel lengths ranging from 18 to 24 inches depending on caliber. THe barrel is also a heavy contour with a threaded muzzle. MSRP there is 1379. Then there is the Impulse Predator which has the black barreled action and a mossy oak camo pattern on the stock. That one comes in 4 calibers but they are all 20 inch medium contour barrels with threaded muzzles. The Predator also has a removable AICS pattern magazine. MSRP on that is 1379. The impulse definitely has a lot going for it. HOWEVER, I have a few things I want to point out. During the press conference for this gun I asked Savage if they had any plans for an AR mag version of the predator and they said they said that wasn’t something they really considered. To me that is a huge oversight, AR mags are probably the most plentiful here in the US, come in capacities of all kinds and are usually pretty affordable. AICS mags range from around 40 bucks all the way up to around 100 for the fancy metal ones. Maybe I’m missing something but that seems like an easy win to have an AR mag instead but I’m just a guy on the internet. Beyond that, the guns weigh in between 8.5 to 9 pounds. With the trend towards light weight guns in recent years, that strikes me as heavy by comparison. At the same time, when you compare this gun to other straight pull options it is priced way below the norm in that segment of the market. I am really eager to hear what you guys have to say about this one. It has some really neat features but do those features grab your attention enough to grab one for yourself? Sound off in the comments and lets talk about it!
Next up this week is a new trigger that promises to piss off the wet blankets at the ATF. Its called the FRT 15 or Forced Reset Trigger and its from a company called Rare Breed Triggers. I’ll try to explain this the best I can. Its a new take on triggers that no one has ever done before. The basic idea is that as the bolt is cycling rearward in its firing cycle, the hammer is pushed back and due to a unique shape of the actual trigger portion inside the trigger unit, the trigger is forced to reset, at the same time that is happening a locking bar in the rear pivots and prevents the gun from firing again until the cycle is complete and the bolt has gone forward again. As you can see, on the forward motion of the bolt, the locking bar is moved out of the way and the hammer moves into its final prefiring position. The cycle then restarts as long as the user has pressure on the trigger. They show in the promo video that this forced reset indicates that the trigger is being pulled by the user each time the gun cycles and therefore it is not a machine gun as per the current laws in the US. This is different than binary triggers because they fire on the pull movement and then again on the release. The MSRP on the trigger is 380 bucks and they are sold out currently and I know the wait list is deep. The action shots of this look pretty incredible. I do see this potentially being an issue though as they do not have a determination letter from ATF and are solely going off of the word of an attorney and what the law says. The problem is that we know from experience that ATF operates outside of the law. Case and point, bump stocks. We have a video right here on TGC showing with slow motion video that bump stocks are absolutely not machine guns per the law BUT they still got banned anyway. Now, thats not to say that this product isn’t awesome, because I absolutely want one. I just have some concerns on the products future. ESPECIALLY given the incoming administration. I’d love to hear what you guys think on this one as well.
How about a little rapid fire? I know you guys like the fast paced stuff. First up is one we briefly covered last week from Keltec. Yes they are a sponsor, no they did not pay for us to talk about this. This was sort of leaked before but now we have some better info. Its called the P50 and its a pistol that uses 50 round P90 mags. Yes 50 rounds of 5.7 ammo in a pistol. The barrel length comes in at 9.6 inches, The gun weighs in at 3.2 pounds and the way you load it is like a belt fed machine gun almost. Theres a lever on the rear and you lift up the top to insert the mag. MSRP lands at 995. THAT my friends is a cool gun. Especially if think about putting a can on it.
Gemtech has released a new suppressor and Its called the Integra 15-22. You guys are smart so you might have guessed it, its an integrally suppressed upper for the 15-22. Essentially theyve taken their MIST suppressor for 10/22s and made it work for the M&P. I fully support any and all rimfire cans and I’m sure this one will be a solid yet very specific choice. Mr guns and gear actually already has a review video posted on this so there will be a link down below to watch that. MSRP on that comes in at 616.
Also in rapid fire news is a new one from Heritage Manufacturing. Its called the Barkeep and long story short, its a short little single action only revolver. It comes chambered in 22 long rifle with an option for 22 mag. The barrel length is just over 2 and a half inches and the gun is overall pretty basic. You even need a rod to push out the spent casings. However, the price tag of 189 for the pearl grip version or 180 for the wood grip means that you’re getting what you might expect for the pricing. I have no idea why I want this gun but something about it screams fun to me. It could be a good option for starting someone out shooting on a budget.
Guntuber of the Week continues this week. If you don’t know, GunTuber of the Week is a segment where I share a gun related channel that by our standards, which are admittedly really high, puts out high quality, entertaining, informative content on a regular basis.
That being said, our GunTuber of the Week this time is Keystone Carry. Jared is a friend of TGC and another PA native who has a real talent for beautiful video productions. Not only that but his presentations are just clean as a whole Here’s a clip.
If you’re into that type of content, go find the link to his channel in the description and get subscribed. Be sure to tell him TGC sent you.
It’s time for more Friendly Fire, the segment where I answer questions from you guys! This time our questions are coming from YouTube!
Our first question is from Wayne Bates and he says how far do you honestly believe the new administration will push their gun control agenda? Simple answer, as far as they possibly can. They want everyone disarmed because of an irrational fear of an inanimate object. Strange things are coming our way. Scott Gansen says is steel cased ammo really that bad for your AR? No. I say this all the time, if it won’t eat steel, it doesn’t deserve brass. Most people out there will not shoot their gun enough to actually cause damage from steel cased ammo, with one exception… a gun built of total crap parts. Any decent rifle will be able to take thousands upon thousands of steel cased rounds. Samuel Johnson says do you think big tech is the new thought police and are red flags going to start rolling in? Yes I absolutely think they have designated themselves as the thought police whether they care to admit that or not. Shutting down the president shows that they are willing to do whatever they want in the name of “safety” and supposedly apps are now being blocks entirely from your phone because of this false idea that there was a riot in DC last week… I mean its all crazy stuff. I don’t know what it will take to rope them in but it is going to get worse before it gets better. Hence why I tell people to join our mailing list to stay in touch.
My friendly fire question to you guys this week, what are your thoughts on what happened in DC? Was it a good thing? Was it dangerous? Do you consider it violent? Let me know in the comments below and If you want to ask a friendly fire question, jump over to the gun collective.com and send it our way!
